Facing Change in Uncertain Times: A Call for Leaders in Social Innovation

What Happens in Your Body When You Hear the Word "Change"?

Think about it.

Do your shoulders tense up?
Does your jaw tighten?
Do you start mentally preparing for the worst, even if you donโ€™t know whatโ€™s coming?

For many of us, especially those doing equity-driven work in public agencies or nonprofit spaces, change feels less like opportunity and more like disruption. But the truth is, itโ€™s often not the change itself. Itโ€™s the uncertainty that shakes us the most.

Uncertainty Feels Personal for Leaders in Communities of Color

Weโ€™re living through a time where unpredictability isnโ€™t just a feelingโ€”itโ€™s a daily reality.

  • What if ICE shows up at our door?

  • What if the grassroots organization weโ€™ve poured our heart into loses funding because decision-makers don't prioritize culturally responsive work?

  • What if our families can't access affordable health care or basic resources?

These are not abstract โ€œwhat ifs.โ€

These are the lived experiences of the people and communities we serve. Often, these are also the lived experiences of our own families and lives.

As an Expert Social Worker who partners with public systems, nonprofits, and other leaders, Iโ€™ve seen how this fear of change, usually rooted in uncertainty, can show up in strategic planning sessions, grant cycles, and leadership transitions. Iโ€™ve also seen what happens when leaders get the right support and space to reframe that fear.

Change Doesn't Have to Be Scary

Change can be overwhelming. And it can also be intentional.

While we may not be able to control everything โ€ฆ think funding shifts, policy rollbacks, political climatesโ€ฆ we can control how we prepare, how we respond, and who we invite into the process of transformation.

So let me ask you:

  • Whatโ€™s happening in your life or your organization thatโ€™s creating resistance to change?

  • What assumptions are guiding your decisions right now?

  • Are you operating from urgency or from alignment?

If those questions hit a nerve, thatโ€™s not a bad thing. It means youโ€™re paying attention.

You Donโ€™t Have to Navigate This Alone

Whether youโ€™re:

  • Leading a public child welfare agency through restructuring,

  • Running a community-centered nonprofit with limited resources,

  • Or a mission-driven entrepreneur juggling advocacy and survivalโ€ฆ
